Renewable Energy Tax Credits Added to Senate Stimulus Bill

Tax incentives for renewable energy are back on the table as the Senate Finance Committee included measures on Wednesday to extend the Production Tax Credit for renewable energy through the end of the 2009 in its version of an economic stimulus package. The measures were introduced to the committee by Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa).

The passage of these measures offers real hope for long-term job growth and economic expansion. [Read more →]

Could oil-producers flood market to hurt renewables?

From energytechstocks.com:
“Saudi Arabia still has a lot of oil; nevertheless, the world doesn’t have enough to meet forecasted demand of roughly 115 million barrels a day by 2030, a more than 30% increase over today’s 87 million barrel daily consumption. Shorter term, should OPEC members feel threatened by new alternative energy technologies, they very well may flood the market, temporarily driving crude prices down in order to make the new technologies appear financially unattractive. That’s the analysis of Valerie Marcel, a Dubai-based petro-politics expert…” Read the entire article

Washington to give the country a fish

An ancient proverb says: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

While the stimulus package under consideration by Congress and the Administration will give short-term help to many people in need and the country a temporary shot in the arm, it basically “gives a man a fish.” [Read more →]

Abu Dhabi to invest $15 billion in renewable energy

Abu Dhabi announced the most ambitious sustainability program ever launched by a government — an initial investment of US$15 billion in projects targeting solar, wind and hydrogen power; carbon reduction and management; sustainable development; education; manufacturing; and research and development. The investment will be channelled through the Masdar Initiative, a company that aims to explore, develop and commercialize future energy sources.

The government of Abu Dhabi appears to understand the realities of the world energy needs and environmental concerns. According to Masdar CEO Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, “Today, as global demand for energy continues to expand and as climate change becomes a real and growing concern, the time has come to look to the future. Our ability to adapt and respond to these realities will ensure that Abu Dhabi’s global energy leadership as well as our own growth and development continues.”

Opportunity Knocks for Presidential Hopefuls with “Green” Economic strategy

Which presidential candidate will have the vision to grab onto one of the most promising job growth forecasts?

A report released by the American Solar Energy Society forecasts as many as 31.5 million new jobs could be created in the renewable and energy efficiency industries by 2030. That is nearly 1.5 million new “green” jobs every year for the next 22 years.

EnergyTechStocks.com sees this as a real opportunity for a presidential candidate to make this an issue of his/her own and help them win the White House:

The first candidate who seizes upon the forecast will be able to use it as the basis for an entire economic development strategy that promises not only tens of millions of new jobs but also trillions of dollars in new revenue for big and small businesses, plus tens of billions of dollars in new federal, state and local revenue.”

Are the right questions about the ENHANCE study being asked?

The recent media coverage about the ENHANCE Study created quite a stir about the effectiveness of Zetia for lowering high cholesterol. Unfortunately, from what I have heard, the news reports seem to be more about creating alarm and generating attention grabbing headlines, but I guess that’s what sells. In their haste to focus on and blast Zetia, they seemed to miss asking an important question about LDL lowering.  [Read more →]

Happy New Year Etiquette

So for how long do we need to keep saying “Happy New year”?

I’m still hearing people wish each other a “Happy New Year”. In fact, yesterday I saw a friend I have not seen since December and he wished me “Happy New Year.” If we see someone in the middle of February that we have not seen or spoke with since December do we still need to wish a “Happy New Year”?

I’m no expert on etiquette, is there a cut off date?

Beware of medicines that can tear your tendons

When taking certain commonly prescribed antibiotics, you run the risk of developing tendon pain, tendonitis and even tendon rupture. That’s why Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group, petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue stronger warnings about the risks of tendon damage associated with a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones including Levaquin and Cipro. However, the FDA failed to respond prompting Public Citizen to initiate a lawsuit to force FDA action. Sadly by the FDA dragging its feet, many people including myself suffered needlessly from debilitating and painful tendon damage. [Read more →]
