Update: Evergreen Solar

Last week I ridiculed the “expert” at Citigroup that put a sell on Evergreen Solar (ESLR). I said I like Evergreen Solar. I advised to take into consideration Citigroup’s shortcomings as “experts” and remember how much they lost in the mortgage securities fiasco.

Today Evergreen Solar announced $1 billion worth of new contracts! The contract ensures that Evergreen will ship about $750 million in solar panels between now and 2013. To put this in perspective, last fiscal year Evergreen Solar recorded revenue of $70 million.

Since Citigroup issued a “sell” Evergreen Solar shares have increased approximately 35%. And I’m no expert!

National Day of Action to Extend the Renewable Energy Tax Incentives

From: Solar Energy Industries Association

Tuesday, May 20 has been designated as a National Day of Action to extend the ITC. Help support American jobs and the U.S. economy by extending Clean Energy Tax Incentives, which are set to expire unless members of the renewable community take action immediately. Evergreen Solar–What the experts are saying, today

I like to follow solar stocks and take a serious look at the company and not go with the recent hype. I have actually been researching and reading about solar companies for several years, long before the recent hype. But besides looking at the company and it’s technology, I admit I do check out analyst reports, the so called experts.

Well recently I read two reports that left me wondering how “experts” could have two completely opposite conclusions.

Last Friday Citigroup initiated coverage on Evergreen Solar (ESLR) and recommended a “Sell.”

Today Jefferies & Company upgraded Evergreen Solar from a “Hold” to a “Buy.”

And they say I’m no expert.

Actually I like Evergreen Solar and believe it has a great future. It has a patented string ribbon technology, locked up its polysilicon supply through 2012, has joint ventures with Q-Cells, a leading solar company in Germany.

I’m no expert, but take into consideration how much Citigroup lost in the mortgage securities fiasco, I’m siding with Jefferies & Company. Evergreen Solar is up 12% since the Citigroup “Sell.”

The Alternative to Suspending the Gas Tax

Thankfully most Americans are seeing through the gas tax suspension gimmick. Clearly the voters in Indiana and North Carolina didn’t buy it.

But here’s an alternative:
Instead of creating an even greater deficit in the federal budget with loss of gas tax revenue, ($10 Billion projected) let’s ask Big Oil to step up and voluntarily reduce the price of gasoline by 18.4 cents a gallon for the summer driving season (the same amount as the federal gas tax). Or falling short of that, perhaps they could simply freeze prices from Memorial day through Labor day. No legislation, no act of Congress; just a leading American industry trying to help their country and fellow Americans. Any chance of this happening? I’m no expert, but I doubt it.

Congress continues to stall on renewable energy

It’s hard to imagine that real solutions to reducing oil consumption, emissions and global warming remain idle while politicians propose doing the opposite by eliminating gasoline taxes. The Clean Energy Tax Stimulus Act of 2008 that provides incentives for renewable energy has been reintroduced once again. There is virtually little debate that this is a needed piece of legislation. An astounding 85% of the public supports the federal government extending tax credits for the renewable energy industry. The passage of these measures offers real hope for long-term job growth and economic expansion. In fact the renewable energy industry is forecast to create approximately 40 million new jobs over the next 20 years. However, it has been bouncing around Congress for months. Here is a quick history of this absurdity: [Read more →]

Exercising slows aging process

It is well established that regular exercise reduces the risks of many life threatening conditions including hypertension, heart attack, stroke and some forms of cancer. Now it looks like we may be able to add aging to that list. According to a recent article appearing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, maintaining aerobic fitness through middle age and beyond may be able to slow the aging process up to 12 years and prolong an independent lifestyle during old age. Saving Oil & Gas takes a National Effort–Are you up for it?

While recent high oil prices can be partly blamed on the shrinking dollar and a spike in commodities investing, its foundation still lies in an oil supply that cannot keep up with growing demand. The key to lower gas prices is lower consumption. But unbelievably America’s leaders are talking about doing the opposite. Proposals to suspend or eliminate the gasoline tax, maintains consumption and fuels higher oil prices. Opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other domestic lands and waters to oil drilling does nothing in the short term as we would not see a drop of this oil for at least 10 years, and even worse it keeps the nation addicted to oil.

While higher prices are painful and will eventually hurt national and global economies, they are unfortunately the most effective way to reduce consumption. Other strategies are available, but politics and resistance by individuals for any conservation keep consumption high. As a nation can we pull together? Can conserving energy become patriotic? We all want lower gas prices but what are we willing to do? Here are a few ideas: [Read more →]
